Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened Dutch-processed cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and tap gently to release air bubbles.
  5. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. Once completely cooled, spread buttercream frosting between the layers and on top of the cake.
